No jai, no deal!

Jai, traditional Buddhist monk's food. It smells as good as it looks
and tastes as good as it smells. Tree fungus four or five different
mushrooms, various soy products, cabbage, vermicelli and Chinatown
spices come together to make this tasty little treat. Think Chinatown
after a summer rain...

Goodbye Gung Gung

I know that for the most part I have led a charmed life. In fact when
I was younger I used to enjoy frowning because it was a new sensation
or at least a rare occurence. However as of late things have turned
towards the tragic and I no longer find frowning quite so novel. Today
we say goodbye to Gung Gung and judging by my performance at Popo
Kong's funeral, I think my eyes will be espescially sweaty today.

RWC

I have a lot of favorite stories about my grandmother, but the one that comes to mind today is when my grandfather fell ill at Melanie's Berkeley graduation way back in '93.  We were out eating at this italian place down on Shattuck when he became very weak and tired so we took him back to the Travelodge on University where they were staying.  Now, when faced with any medical malady the first thing that comes to any Chinese person's mind is... we need some hot water.  Well, popo is no different but unfortunately they were in a hotel room and not in her kitchen.  Anyway, long story short, somehow this amazing woman got water to boil on the little burner attached to the motel coffee maker.  She didn't put the water through the machine mind you, she somehow willed the water to boil on the burner alone.  This took all night and she was exhausted in the morning but Gung gung got his water and was better the next day.  This act of boiling water, while simple, has served to me as the image of devotion and love.
I was given the task of telling this beautiful woman last night, that her cancer had spread from her kidney, to her lungs, and now to her bones.   And I witnessed my hero come to terms with her own morality.  How did she take it you ask?  How do you think she took it.

The Last Laugh

John Betjeman
I made hay while the sun shone.
My work sold.
Now, if the harvest is over
And the world cold,
Give me the bonus of laughter
As I lose hold.

On a lighter note, this kid is a genius...

Where I'm from

Academic years start and end on July 1st. Thus with another year coming to a close I reflect back on what has been the most challenging and tragic to date. Through the turmoil, my parents have remained strong, rolling with the punches, neither needing, nor asking for help. Hopefully this blog will document a better year to come.
